Whatever you do, do it heartily, as unto the Lord (Col. 3:23)
Once upon a time there was a dreadful distinction between secular work and Christian work, secular products and Christian products. While I’m not opposed to the idea of claiming our work and products to be unique because of our Christian values, we mustn’t use this as an excuse for putting out low-quality or sub-par work.
For a long time, “Christian” music was considered “bad” music. “Christian” books and art were considered “second-rate” products. And “Christian” workers sometimes had questionable reputations around the workplace.
Fortunately, a lot of this has changed over the past twenty-five years or so. Actually, if you look back through the historical records, “Christian” music, books, art, and other forms of craftsmanship were classically synonymous with “excellence.” We just hit a weird little stride there for a while.
Now we have good music, powerful leaders, strong workers, and talented artists.
Good job, Church. Let’s keep it up.
In my humble opinion, as an author and musician, we’ve effectively caught back up with the world, and that’s something to be celebrated. But let’s not stop there. Let’s keep pushing the envelope and claim back the top spots in every industry.
Whatever you do, do it heartily, as unto the Lord. (Col. 3:23)
Good ‘ol Paul. He gave some pretty good advice, which applies to all of us. Do everything as unto the Lord.
Are you business owner? Be excellent, as unto the Lord.
Are you a secretary? Be excellent, as unto the Lord.
Do you flip burgers? Run a hedge fund? Build furniture? Are you still in school? Learning an instrument? Drawing, painting, sketching, writing, singing, consulting, selling, shipping, organizing, stocking, accounting, building… ANYTHING! Do it all as unto the Lord.
Because the world doesn’t need any more people trying to get by with “just a little bit less.”
The world needs more people pursuing excellence with all that they are, in all that they do.
